Never Say Die

From time to time, every Webmaster experiences some sort of burnout, and it’s not a pretty sight. But once the madness takes its toll, how does one recover from its grip? The secret is to not let it take you over completely…

When you’re burned out, you simply lose whatever motivation you might have had. You don’t want to even look at a computer, much less update a site. You want to turn into the anti-technology vegetable and relax.

Don’t fight the urge to relax and take a few days off. Take a couple of weeks if you need to do so; no one is going to stop you. But don’t take months at a time, and don’t let friends or family members talk you into getting a job outside the home if you don’t want to work outside the home.

Think about it this way: Where else can you work in your underwear, looking at pornographic images, and get paid for it? Sounds like a dream job to me. As a matter of fact, it sounds like a dream job to a great many people. So why would anyone even think of leaving it?

People who are suffering from burnout don’t really “think” in the terms of sane, rational thought. They are instead thinking through a haze of stress and anxiety.

Don’t get me wrong, the porn business is not only a dream job, it’s a JOB. It will stress you out just as easily as (if not more easily than), any other job. You have to manage your time, you have to manage your sites, galleries, content, money, etc. You are your own boss, and while that’s very satisfying, it’s also extremely stressful at times.

Burnout occurs when “all work and no play” has made Jack a dull boy. When you focus your energies solely on making the money you want, then you’re forgetting why it is you want to make the money in the first place.

Overcoming Burnout
To help you through this period of burnout, I would suggest that you try taking a few minutes to just sit in silence and think. This is often called meditation, but whatever you call it, this period of thought and silence can help you untangle the nerves.

Write out a list of what you want. I know it sounds hokey, but do it. Figure out how close you are to getting it. Use that motivation to help you keep burnout at bay.

If you’re so driven that you’re working 12-20 hour days, then you might consider taking a few days off. I don’t care if you can afford it; you can’t afford the cost to your health. Over-work and over-stress can easily lead to heart attack, stroke, or emotional and mental difficulties. Take some time off and relax before your body takes the time off for you, whether you like it or not.

Don’t let yourself get burned out. Moderate your work schedule, take breaks, go play in the snow with the kids for an hour then come back and work some more. Go ride some waves for a while, enjoy a party here and there, anything that can take your mind off your work for a bit will help prevent burnout.

The best way to take care of business is to ensure that it doesn’t “take care of you.” Get some sleep, eat occasionally, and learn to relax. After all, you’ve got the dream job. Let everyone else work at McDonald’s. Take care of yourselves ~ Tala
